In late 2025 downtown Hamilton welcomed patrons to the FirstOntario Centre to experience its multi-million dollar makeover as the reopened, sleek new TD Coliseum. The renovation completely changes the game for downtown Hamilton, bringing a fresh, modern energy to the city’s core. The extensive renovations feature state-of-the-art premium seating, vastly upgraded concourses, and world-class sound and lighting systems designed to rival major NHL venues. This modernized entertainment hub has successfully positioned Steeltown as a premier destination not only for big name concerts but also for top-tier sports and entertainment, setting the stage for a dramatic revitalization of the surrounding downtown core.

Heading up a new wave of sports team arrivals, in March 2026, the New York Islanders American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate announced the relocation of their farm team from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Hamilton, Ontario. The franchise brings high-caliber professional men’s hockey back to Hamilton for the first time in over a decade under the team name the Hamilton Hammers. The Hammers will call the TD Coliseum home starting in October 2026, while using Flamborough’s Harry Howell Twin-Pad Arena for their practice facilities. The presence of an AHL team guarantees a consistent 38 game home schedule, increasing regular and predictable foot traffic to the downtown core from October through April.

On the heels of that announcement, in May 2026, Hamilton was officially awarded a brand new expansion franchise by the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). The PWHL has experienced explosive growth and record-breaking attendance figures across North America, making this expansion team a massive win for the city. Although a team name has not yet been announced, the PWHL Hamilton uniforms will be a distinct colour palette of gold, maroon, and cream that honours local sports history. The team will practice out of Ancaster’s Morgan Firestone Arena while playing home games at the TD Coliseum. This team broadens Hamilton’s sports demographic, attracting a highly engaged, diverse fanbase to downtown entertainment districts.

Rounding out these exciting announcements with lacrosse and basketball, in 2025, the Toronto Rock announced their permanent return to TD Coliseum. The six-time National Lacrosse League (NLL) champions bring an incredibly loyal, high-energy lacrosse fanbase to the local calendar.

Additionally, two International Federation of Basketball FIBA World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifier games will be held at TD Coliseum in July matching up Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team against Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Fans will be able to see current Toronto Raptor RJ Barret play for Team Canada, former Raptor Norman Powell currently with the Miami Heat playing for Jamaica and Jose Alvarado of the New York Knicks playing for Puerto Rico.
